Issy raises £500 over coffee

Issy Smith recently arranged a coffee morning at her home and raised over £500 for Teenage Cancer Trust's South East Appeal. She chose to raise money for us for a number of reasons, the main one being that she lost her brother Freddie to brain cancer just over a year ago.

Freddie's family spent a lot of time with him at the Royal Marsden when he was first ill 11 years ago, so she was keen for this money to go to the unit we are building there now. Issy and three of her friends are now challenging themselves to trek up Snowdonia to raise money for charity. Issy is a very strong young lady, we look forward to hearing how her challenge goes.

Blue Day wrap up!

Supported by ‘TheBestOf’, approximately 90 companies, schools and individuals across the South East and Channel Island went crazy for our first ever ‘Blue Day’ on 14th October.

To raise money, people dressed up in Blue all-in-one Morph suits, dyed their hair Blue and played Blues Music whilst hundreds of delicious Blue Cupcakes were consumed across the region! The fun-filled event enjoyed loads of media coverage across the counties including radio, TV and newspapers.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved on the day!

Legal and General staff member swims 4.3 miles

After committing to raise £25,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust South East, Retail Savings Operations in Hove saw their latest challenge completed by Chris Wilson of Legal and General. Chris is an enthusiastic supporter and fundraiser for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Chris swam 4.3 miles of the River Adur from Shoreham to Upper Beeding. This was Chris’ 3rd challenge this year, after already completing the London to Brighton bike ride and the Brighton Marathon. Chris said “ this was most definitely the most difficult out of the three purely because of the freezing cold water! I was in the water for just under 2 hours, and was shivering for about 2 hours afterwards as well. I have now set my sights on doing the 3 Peaks challenge next year and then a Triathlon in the summer to bring the three events this year together''

Chris is an inspiration to his friends and colleagues and we are so proud to have him on the team!

Victoria B photoshoot

Victoria B offered the experience of a photoshoot for some of the girls being treated at the Royal Marsden. She wanted to offer this chance to take some great portrait photos. Victoria said of the shoot, "They seemed to take everything in their stride and their strength and positivity was really inspiring."

A royal opening for The Royal Marsden

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opened the new Oak Centre for Children and Young People at The Royal Marsden in Surrey on 29 September. The Centre includes our new Teenage Cancer Trust unit which will be one of the largest and most impressive units in the country. This new unit will be one of the largest and most impressive units in the country complete with five individually designed bedrooms with ensuites and a pair of four bed bays colour coordinated in funky, modern designs. The unit which is now in the final stages of development should be open to young cancer patients later this year.

Parker Building Supplies' fundraising efforts

Mount Snowdon climb

Well done to Tonbridge Kitchen Showroom team from Parker Building Supplies LTD who took part in a Mount Snowdon challenge - climbing a staggering 3560 feet all in the name of Teenage Cancer Trust. On 11 June, Matt Hollamby, Amy Lee and Stephanie Goodfellow took just four hours to climb to the summit and raised £150.00.

Skydiving for Teenage Cancer Trust

On Sunday 9 July, five intrepid ‘skydive virgins’ from Parker Building Supplies set off for the Headcorn Airbase in Kent to take on the challenge.
The Skydive from 12,000 feet was a brave attempt by the team. The participants were Matt Hollamby and Stephanie Goodfellow from Parker Kitchens in Tonbridge High Street, Ollie Agate from the Web Sales Department, Joe North from the Uckfield branch, and Stuart Payton from the East Grinstead branch. After the dive Matt said ‘The feeling when we jumped was incredible, flying through the air at 120mph for 30 seconds ...then silence when the chute opened and floated down to the ground. The best feeling ever!!!”

Bracknell and Wokingham College

Thank you to students and staff Bracknell and Wokingham College for raising a fantastic £850 for Teenage Cancer Trust. The money was raised through students dressing up and collecting money in the town centre and activities such as cake sales and raffles.

Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys

After seeing a fellow pupil suffer from a rare type of bone cancer in 2007 the current head boy of Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys, Billy Harris, came up with the idea to introduce a Head Boy’s Charity to raise money and awareness for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The school community started raising money in November last year at awards evenings where Billy talked briefly about the charity to parents and left collection pots for any donations.

Following this the Head Boy’s Charity organised events such as non-uniform days, music concerts and cake sales and sold wristbands and pin-badges to both students and teachers on their Humanities day in February.

Teenage Cancer Unit at the Royal Marsden

Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at the Royal Marsden will be one of the largest and most impressive units in the country, complete with five individually designed bedrooms with ensuites, a pair of four bed bays colour coordinated in funky, modern designs.

The unit, which is designed to make hospital stays for young people bearable and comfortable, will also feature a dedicated patient kitchen, roof terrace and ergonomically shaped passages and areas to relax and listen to music. A chill out area is divided into areas for relaxation, TV enjoyment, music and entertainment. A pool table will create a focal point for the space and there is even a dedicated gaming room for young people to enjoy hours of playstation in private. A state-of-the-art ‘snoezelen’ pod is off one end of the chill out zone which will provide a place for quiet reflection.

To keep up with their school work and studies there is a large school room in the unit and full internet access. This will make an enormous difference and help young people to keep up with their peers and get back to ‘normal’ life after treatment.

The unit will also cater for families and friends with a parent’s lounge and kitchen and space for family and friends to stay over, ensuring the family unit is kept together during long stays in hospital.

Everyone at Teenage Cancer Trust is very excited about the difference this new unit will make to lots of young people with cancer across the South East and we’re working hard with the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to make it happen.

You may have received communication from the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, updating you about the development of the Children and Young People’s Cancer Centre. Although Teenage Cancer Trust was not specifically mentioned, we can assure you that our unit is very much a part of the development and we are still fundraising towards our goal.

Your ongoing support of Teenage Cancer Trust and our South East Appeal is much appreciated. Together we can transform the way young people with cancer are treated in the South East by ensuring they receive the best possible care and professional support.

Legal & General raises over £34,000

Legal & General has been supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust at their Hove office through a partnership with their local football team, Brighton & Hove Albion, since 2006.
