Robert Sefton - Youth Support Co-ordinator in Liverpool

Robert Sefton is the new Youth Support Co-ordinator based in Alder Hey Hospital and is running the Barcelona Marathon on 25 March 2012 in aid of the North West region of Teenage Cancer Trust, covering our units in Alder Hey Hospital, Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, and The Christie Hospital in Manchester.

Rob's only been in post a short time but can already see the huge difference having separate units for teenage cancer patients makes. Recognising that young people with cancer still have the same issues that all teenagers have, and that these years can be a stressful enough as it is without having to cope with their illness, is very important.

An occasional runner, Rob has taken part in one 10k race and has always aimed to run a Marathon. New York beckoned but this was interrupted by the dreaded shin splints.

After looking for a charity to support in the Barcelona Marathon he chose Teenage Cancer Trust after seeing first hand the difference we make - he also cant wait to wear the Teenage Cancer Trust very colourful vest! Rob's target time is under 5 hours, without stopping!

University of Manchester Start of Year Fair

Teenage Cancer Trust Education & Advocacy team from the North, Teenage Cancer Trust funded staff from the North West, The Christie and the University of Manchester, as well as patients of the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at The Christie, attended the University of Manchester ‘Start of Year’ Fair during the week of 19 September.

Over 9,000 students attended the fair and it seemed as if the majority of these came to visit our stand!

Information about symptoms of Teenage and Young Adult cancers was given out to students and we distributed questionnaires to assess knowledge of common symptoms of cancer in the Teenage and Young Adult population.

A first year student at the University, 19 year old Emilie Milton Stevens, was the lucky winner of a £70 meal voucher for Gusto Restaurant in Didsbury who generously supported the event. Emilie recognised that weight loss can be a sign of cancer, that boys can get breast cancer, that using sunbeds increases your risk of skin cancer in later life and that, in the UK, 6 young people a day find out that they have cancer.

Rannstock Festival – Blackburn July 2011

A huge thank you to the Hodge family for all their hard work in making the second Rannstock Festival a huge success! The event has raised £852 in total and here Peter Hodge tells us about the day!

‘The 9th July saw the second Rannstock Festival, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. After many thunderstorms during the week leading up to the event, there was worry that the festival would turn out to be a washout. On the day the sun miraculously came out and well over 120 guests graced the fields surrounded by the spectacular views of the Ribble valley. This was a great sign that the day would be a success and highly enjoyable.

The music kicked off with several acoustic acts to warm the crowd up, highlights included the talented Alex Hulme and the soulful Jessica Jones. As the beautiful sunset started to form in the sky, ‘Hello Bamboo’ graced the stage to add a certain comedic twist. With the day well and truly oiled, and everyone had tucked into the fabulous Lancashire Hotpot, it was time for Manchester's ‘Beat The Radar’ to hit the stage with their selection of well crafted Indie pop songs to get the audience going and gear them up for headliners ‘Inego’. When ‘Inego’ took to the stage most of the audience surged forward to the front of the stage, dancing and singing back to some of the bands power pop rock anthems. At this point the night had already turned into an absolute classic, unforgettable experience for everyone involved. After Inego's triumphant set DJ's Shocon and Scrap Jakki had the crowd dancing into the night. This is what summers are all about - celebration, sunshine, friends, and charitable love.

Teenager raises over £5,000

Teenager, Lucy Beesley from Anglesey, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour last Christmas, has helped raise at least £5,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Lucy and her mum, Sue, organised a sponsored walk around the Anglesey coastal path at the end of June to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, following a 6 week stay in the unit at Clatterbridge earlier this year.

Around 85 walkers took part in the 13 mile walk, from friends and family to members of the local Brownies and Rainbow groups. Lucy said "We have had the most fantastic support whilst planning the event and on the day itself and would like to thank everybody who walked, the sponsors themselves and the great team of organisers and helpers."

Patients night out at TGI's!

24 young people from the Teenage Cancer Trust unit at The Christie Hospital had a fantastic night out in February at TGI Friday’s at The Trafford Centre.

Ten places were free of charge and the staff put on a cocktail making display and even allowed some young people to have a go themselves. The staff were very attentive and a brilliant night was had by all.

Corrie's Claire Peacock gives her support!

On the night Julia Haworth’s on screen character, Claire Peacock was seen escaping from Coronation Street’s Rover’s Return to begin a new life in France, Julia Haworth was behind the bar of a Manchester Public House, receiving a cheque from the staff for Teenage Cancer Trust.

In December the landlord and staff held a ‘Corriefest Day’ which was attended by the producer, director and casting director of the longest running soap, to mark and celebrate 50 years of Coronation Street being on our television screens.

The Teenage Cancer Trust was one of two charities to receive proceeds from the raffle and auction held on the day.
