Preventing cancer

We don't know why cancer develops, but we do know there are ways to reduce your risk. A risk factor is anything that increases your chance of getting a disease.

Different types of cancer have different risk factors. Some risks, such as smoking, can be controlled. Others, like your age or family history, can't be. But even if you have a number of risk factors it doesn't necessarily mean that you will get the disease.

It's important to remember that things you do now, while you are still growing up, can help reduce your risk of getting cancer later in life.

To reduce your risk you should always try to:

  • Eat healthy food
  • Get exercise
  • Avoid sunbeds
  • Wear high factor suncream
  • Avoid smoking
  • Get to know your body
