Effects of radiotherapy

During radiotherapy the skin in the area where you’re being treated can become, flaky, itchy, sore, or discolored and sometimes it can also start to peel or to weep.

What you can do to help

  • You can wash the area gently with warm water and a non-perfumed soap but don’t use any other chemicals on the skin.
  • You can use an unscented moisturising cream (like aqueous cream or E45) on the area two to three times a day to stop it from getting too dry, but try not to rub the area.
  • Make sure you wear loose fitting clothes, and take extra care in the sun.

Effects of chemotherapy

Some chemotherapy drugs cause changes in your skin colouring. Your skin may become patchy with some areas becoming darker or lighter than usual. Your skin might also get quite dry and your hands and feet may start to peel (your doctor can prescribe something to help if this happens). Your skin should go back to normal when you finish your treatment.
