Feeling sick

Effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can both make you feel sick because they can affect the part of the brain that ‘tells’ you that you want to be sick. Chemo drugs and painkillers can also affect the delicate chemical balance in the bloodstream.

Other causes

There are other side effects which might make you feel sick too, including damage to the liver or bowel, constipation, and anxiety.

Things that can help

There are some really effective anti-sickness medicines out there and you’ll automatically be given them if you’re on chemo or any other treatment likely to cause nausea. If you’re worried about sickness, talk it over with your doctor - there’s lots that can be done.
